An HR Advisor role is often where your career starts to open up. You’re moving beyond supporting HR processes and towards advising managers, handling more complex people issues and building the judgement that comes with greater ownership.

One HR Advisor job might give you ownership of a busy employee relations caseload. Another could combine ER with recruitment, policy, organisational change or wider people projects.

You might want more direct contact with managers, more complex cases or the opportunity to work alongside experienced HR Business Partners and specialist teams.

MCS will help you understand what each role really offers, so you can choose the experience that takes your career in the direction you want.

The responsibilities of an HR Advisor vary depending on the organisation, sector and structure of the HR team.

A typical role could involve:

  • Advising managers on employee relations matters
  • Supporting disciplinary, grievance and performance processes
  • Managing absence cases and occupational health referrals
  • Supporting organisational change, including redundancy and TUPE
  • Reviewing and updating HR policies and procedures
  • Supporting recruitment and onboarding where required
  • Maintaining accurate HR records and producing reports
  • Working with managers to resolve people issues
  • Contributing to employee engagement and wellbeing activity
  • Supporting wider HR and people projects

Some HR Advisor jobs are heavily focused on employee relations, while others offer a broader generalist remit. Understanding that balance can be important when deciding whether a role supports the experience you want to build.

Moving into an HR Advisor role usually means demonstrating that you are ready to take more ownership and provide advice with greater independence.

Employers may look for:

  • Previous HR Officer, HR Coordinator or generalist HR experience
  • Practical understanding of employment law
  • Experience supporting employee relations cases
  • Confidence advising and communicating with managers
  • Strong judgement and problem-solving skills
  • The ability to handle sensitive situations professionally
  • Experience using HR systems
  • Good organisation and case management skills
  • The ability to balance employee needs with business requirements

For HR Officers looking to make the step up, exposure to employee relations can be particularly valuable. Being able to show how you have supported a case, applied policy, advised a manager or handled a difficult conversation can demonstrate that you are ready for greater responsibility.

HR Advisor jobs can be found across a wide range of organisations in Belfast and Northern Ireland.

You could work within technology, professional services, financial services, manufacturing, retail, the public sector or a growing SME. The shape of the role can vary considerably between them.

In a larger organisation, you may work as part of an established HR team with access to specialist functions. In a smaller business, you could have a broader remit and work directly with managers and senior leaders across the organisation.

You may also come across opportunities under titles such as:

  • People Advisor
  • HR and People Advisor
  • Employee Relations Advisor
  • Senior HR Advisor
  • People and Culture Advisor
  • HR Generalist

Permanent roles are one option, but fixed-term HR jobs can also provide valuable experience. Taking on a contract with greater responsibility or exposure to more complex HR work can help you build experience for your next permanent move.

Technology is taking care of more of the routine processes that once occupied HR teams, but the advisory side of HR still depends heavily on people.

HR systems can make reporting, record keeping, onboarding and other processes more efficient. AI can also support areas such as drafting, analysis and accessing information more quickly.

For HR Advisors, the important skill is knowing how to use those tools while applying your own judgement.

An employee relations case cannot always be reduced to a process or policy. You need to understand the context, listen to different perspectives, communicate sensitively and help managers make appropriate decisions.

As HR technology develops, those human skills can become even more important alongside digital confidence.

HR Advisor experience can open several routes as your career develops.

A common progression is towards Senior HR Advisor, HR Business Partner or HR Manager positions. You could also choose to specialise in an area of HR that particularly interests you.

Potential career paths include:

  • Senior HR Advisor
  • HR Business Partner
  • HR Manager
  • Employee Relations
  • Learning and Development
  • Talent and Resourcing
  • Reward and Benefits
  • People and Culture
  • Head of HR

If you enjoy working closely with managers and understanding wider business challenges, HR Business Partnering may be a natural direction. If you prefer complex casework, you may choose to develop deeper expertise in employee relations.

The experience you gain as an HR Advisor can help you work out which direction suits you.
