We're recruiting on behalf of the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust for a Band 4 Pharmacy Technician within Healthcare in Prison, supporting the delivery of safe, efficient and high‑quality medicines management services within Maghaberry Prison.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a forward‑thinking pharmacy team delivering comprehensive dispensary, medicines management and stock control services. You will contribute directly to patient care, operational safety, and the Trust's commitment to providing timely, effective and person‑centred healthcare within a secure environment.

The Role
Working as part of the Healthcare in Prison Pharmacy team, you will:

  • Assist in the delivery of all dispensary services under pharmacist supervision, ensuring safe, accurate and timely dispensing of prescribed medicines.
  • Dispense prescriptions using the pharmacy computer system and support stock management within treatment rooms, including liaising with Primary Care nurses regarding stock control.
  • Monitor fridge temperatures and maintain fridge logs, taking action where required to maintain cold chain integrity.
  • Maintain the dispensary environment, equipment and storage areas in a clean, safe and organised manner.
  • Process returned medicines from treatment rooms and assess suitability for reuse, ensuring safe disposal where appropriate.
  • Support medicines management activities, including issuing self‑administration medicines and providing counselling where appropriate.
  • Assist with controlled drug administration alongside nursing staff, ensuring accurate documentation within CD registers and secure storage in line with legislation.
  • Maintain appropriate stock levels through daily requisition processing, efficient top‑up services and regular expiry‑date checking.
  • Record medication‑related information on patient medical records (EMIS), ensuring accurate and timely documentation.
  • Re‑order repeat medications to ensure continuity of supply and reduce medication‑related risks.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, liaising with the dispensing contractor, nursing teams and pharmacy colleagues to resolve medication issues.
  • Support monitoring of prescribing trends, workload data collection and cost‑efficient use of pharmaceutical products.
  • Ensure safe and secure storage of medicines across all designated areas in line with Trust security procedures and medicines legislation.
  • Promote a culture of openness, supporting the Trust's whistleblowing policy and maintaining safe systems of practice.
  • Adhere to Trust policies including Health & Safety, Infection Prevention and Control, Information Governance, Equality of Opportunity and Records Management.
  • Participate in ongoing personal development, including development of eHealth competencies and maintaining knowledge relevant to the role.

You will play an active role in maintaining high pharmacy standards, supporting effective team working and ensuring the safe and consistent delivery of medicines management services within the prison environment.

Key Requirements:

Professional Qualifications:

  • BTEC and NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Candidates due to qualify by July 2024 may apply and may be offered the post pending successful completion.

Experience:
A minimum of 2 years' experience working as a Student Pharmacy Technician (minimum 14 hours per week).

Other Requirements:

  • Full UK driving licence and access to a car (reasonable adjustments available).
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and demonstrate effective communication, organisation, numeracy and IT skills.

The Package:

  • Location: Maghaberry Prison, South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust
  • Band: 4
  • Hours: 37.5 per week (or 22.5 part‑time)
  • Flexible Working: Full‑time, part‑time and term‑time options available
  • Security Vetting: This role requires CTC (Counter‑Terrorist Check) clearance due to the secure environment.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to undergo this vetting process.
  • Additional Requirements: Enhanced Access NI checks will apply.
