Using a Recruitment Consultant vs. a Direct Application

4 October 2017

The recruitment sector continues to grow and as it does it can raise the question, “Why go through a recruitment consultant when I can just apply directly?”

Recruitment Consultants can add a significant amount of value to job seekers which saves the bother of trawling through countless job boards, trying to remember where you have applied and what you put on your cover letter.

1 – Explore several options at the same time

Using a consultancy will allow you to be able to explore several different options at the same time. I.T is booming in Belfast at the moment and as such after a consultation to find out exactly what type of role and company is the correct next step for you a consultancy will be able to present you with a number of options that match your requirements.

2 – Time Saving

Trawling through job boards, filling out multiple application forms and tailoring your CV for each specific company as well as holding down your current role and a personal life can seem like a constant juggling act. After discussing which opportunities, you would like to explore a consultant can submit applications on your behalf and with your permission tailor your applications for that specific role.

3 – Be fully prepared

A consultant will have a relationship with several contacts within the company. They should be able to give you more of an insight into the company, their culture and their priorities. Your consultant will be able to give you more information about the role than what is available on a job description and will be able to highlight to you what the company/hiring manager is looking for. If the consultant has an established relationship with the company they will be able to give you some tips on interview format and possibly some of the questions you will be asked, allowing you to be as prepared as possible.

4 – Be kept up to date

It can be frustrating when you interview for a role and are then left in limbo, often a hiring manager simply cannot respond to everyone who applies for a role. An advantage of using a consultant is their strong relationship with the company. Recruitment processes can at times be slow, however most of the time your consultant will be able to update you on what stage the process is up to or why there is a delay.

5 – Your consultant is trained in negotiation

You many not feel comfortable to negotiate your own salary or worried that you will be perceived as greedy or only interested in money. Your consultant will have experience and training in negotiating salaries and will feel comfortable negotiating the best deal available and can remove any awkwardness there may be between you and your new potential boss.

6 – Market Expertise

Your consultant is a specialist in their market and will be able to give you a valuable insight into the current environment at that specific moment. This also means that they will be able to advise you on salary expectations, career progression opportunities and potential new companies coming to market.
